He was predeceased by: his parents, Charlie Nixon and Virginia Mitchell Smith Wall; his sons, Donnie and Mark Smith; and his siblings, Willie Smith, Dock Smith, Buck Smith, Junior Smith, Minnie Hill and Lillie Mae Edwards.
He is survived by: his wife Blois Vaughn Smith; his daughters, Brenda Ormond of Goldsboro, Patricia McKeel of Selma and Jackie Radcliff of Princeton; and his grandchildren, Melody McCoy, Jason McKeel, Bradley McKeel, Jacob Pfaller, Travis Pfaller and Matthew Pfaller. He is also survived by 18 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter.
