He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Arthur Thomas and Mattie Emily Poe Thomas; and his brother-in-law Marcus Clark. He is survived by: his wife Etta Brooks Thomas; his children, Eddie Thomas (Jo Ann) of Pittsboro, Scott Thomas (Donna) of Pittsboro, Jeff Thomas (Sheri Haney) of Greer and Joette Springle (Jim) of Pittsboro; and his siblings, Arthur Thomas Jr., Cornelia Clark of Apex, Boots Atkinson (Don) of Pittsboro and Valinda Thomas (James) of Pittsboro.
