He was predeceased by: his parents, Cooper Cates and Wilma Long Cates; and his brother Billy. He is survived by: his wife Lynn Rimmer Cates; his son Patrick Cates of Hillsborough, NC; his granddaughter Lauren Cates of Morrisville, NC; his siblings, Richard Cates of Hurdle Mills, NC, Sandy Cates of Randleman, NC, Jackie Rimmer of Roxboro, NC and Marie Cates of Roxboro, NC; and his friend Lynn.
No formal memorial service is planned at this time due to COVID-19.
