He was predeceased by: his parents, Addis Pittard Cates and Esther Curtiss Cates; his brothers, Brooks and Tad; his son Charles Curtiss Cates, Jr.; and his great grandchild Josiah Charles Montgomery.
He is survived by: his wife Monica; his daughter Laura Robbins (Kevin) of Lockport, NY; his grandchildren, Margaret Montgomery (Steve) of Wayne, PA, Colton, Mary Rachel Robbins of Reston, VA and Anna Robbins of Oak Park, IL.; his son John Cates (Janee) of Southern Pines, NC; his grandsons, Brice Cates (Taylor) of Jacksonville, NC, Waylon and Robert Cates of Jackson, WY.; and his stepdaughters, Lynne Tetroe, Dena Price and Jill McDougall.
