He was predeceased by: his father William Bates; and his brother Bobby Bates. He is survived by: his wife Michelle P. Bates; his daughters, Andree Snyder (Marty) and Jennifer Baker (Stephen); his siblings, Sarah Jenkins of Columbia, SC and Richard Bates (Sue) of Mulberry, FL; and his granddaughter Megan "Meg" Snyder of Durham.
