He was predeceased by: his parents, Judge Chavis and Fannie B. Allen; his sons, Robert Chavis, Herman Chavis and Carl Chavis; and his siblings, Elam Chavis, Moses Chavis and Willie Thomas Chavis.
He is survived by: his wife Lorean Chavis of Durham, NC; and his children, Quinten Chavis of Atlanta, GA, Darryl Chavis of Durham, NC, Clementine Rochelle of Raleigh, NC, Thomasena Wilson (Vann) of Creedmoor, NC, Loreana Chavis of Durham, NC, Avire Bullock (Joseph) of Stem, NC and Angela Jimerson (Arthur) of Durham, NC. He is also survived by twenty-three grandchildren. nineteen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
