He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Speed, Sr. and Alice Thorpe Speed. He is survived by: his children, James Speed, Jr. (Jackie) of Raleigh, Derrick Speed (Mary) of Harnett County and Vashone Eaton (Paul) of Oxford; and his siblings, Catherine Webb of Creedmoor, Josephine Speed of Oxford, Ella Mitchell of Oxford, Charlie Speed (Deborah) of Oxford, Dennis Speed of Oxford, Danny Speed (Learnetta) of Creedmoor and Michael Speed (Antoinette) of Oxford. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
