He was predeceased by: his father Kenneth Dale Coombes. He is survived by: his mother Pauline "Polly" Gregory Coombes; his children, Nicholas Coombes (Crystal Fox), Autumn Mahaffey (Michael "Pete") and Drew Coombes (Jennifer); his grandchildren, Lucas Coombes, Alyssa Coombes and Aubrey Mahaffey; and his sisters, Celesta Galey (late Charlie), Cheryl Harp (late Wallace) and Nancy Coombes. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Dale's memory to: Statesville Firemen's Relief Fund, c/o Chris Stikeleather, 4317 Taylorsville Highway Statesville, NC 28625 or to Smith Chapel Church 107 Chapel Rd Union Grove, NC 28689.
