He was predeceased by: his parents, Arthur Smith and Anne Keohan Smith. He is survived by: his wife Celia Routh Hooper; his sons, Daniel Hooper Smith (Brandy) of Sarasota, FL and Thomas Arthur Hooper Smith (Jennifer Moore) of Gainesville, FL; his sister Stephanie Nicholson (Brendon) of Pensacola, FL; and his granddaughter Kayleigh M. McCarthy of Vienna, VA. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He worked with children and adolescents clinically in Cleveland, and after a post-doctoral fellowship at the Menninger Foundation in Topeka, Kansas, came to NC to work in Pittsboro, Chapel Hill, and Asheboro.
