He was predeceased by: his former wife Lydia Mauldin Thompson; his son Douglas Merritt York; and his siblings, Jay V. Thompson, Shirley Thompson, Worth Thompson, Dorothy Byrd and Maxine Byrd.
He is survived by: his wife Jean Hawfield Thompson; his children, Boyce Thompson, Brenda Thompson Ritchie of Albemarle, James Paul Hill (Ann) of Washington, NC and Claudia Hill Lang (William) of Tampa; and his grandchildren, Angie Bjorklund (Wes), Jessica Thomson (Jill), Heather Aram (Jim), Anthony Thompson (Leigh Ann), Mary Leigy Beth Price (Donald), Douglas York (Rose), Austin Lang, Eli Lang (Mallorie), Grant Lang, Leland Hill and Garrison Lang.
