He was predeceased by: his parents, Will Smithey and Rose Gentle Smithey; and his siblings, James Smithey, Pete Smithey, Dorothy Stoud and Sybil Treadway.

He is survived by: his wife Opal Smithey of North Wilkesboro; his children, Bill Lawson (Chong) of Virginia and Tina Lawson of Virginia; and his siblings, Calvin Smithey (Vera) of North Wilkesboro, Jean Queen of North Wilkesboro and Marion Cleary of North Wilkesboro.

A graveside service was held on Sunday, January 12th 2025 at 3:00 PM at the Edgewood Baptist Church Cemetery (2300 Edgewood Rd, Wilkesboro, NC 28697).
