He was predeceased by: his parents, James Chester Shumate and Grace Faye Richardson Shumate; his grandson Joseph Shumate; and his siblings, Ruth Ann Shumate Cleary, William Ray, Thomas Marshall, Donald "Duck" Nelson, Randall Stewart and Joseph Benny Shumate.
He is survived by: his children, Teresa Watkins (Robert) of Hays, Joey Keith Shumate (Teresa Brown Shumate) of North Wilkesboro and Justin Brown; his stepson Matthew Brown; his grandchildren, Lyle Watkins, Lane Watkins and Mason Shumate; his sisters, Juanita Shumate Brewer of Roaring River and Barbara Shumate Anderson (Jim) of Roaring River; and his nephew Dale Cleary of North Wilkesboro.
