He was predeceased by: his parents, John Robert "Bob" and Alice Murdock Shumate; and his brother-in-law Wayne Junior Roope. He is survived by: his daughter Ashley "Nikki" Anderson of North Wilkesboro; his siblings, Rebecca Shumate Roope of Hays, Tony Shumate (Julie) of Hays and James Shumate (Misty) of Roaring River; and his pet Abby. He is also survived by two grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews.

Visitation was held on Friday, February 7th 2025 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the New Covenant Baptist Church (207 Hawkins Hollow Rd, Hays, NC 28635). A funeral service was held on Friday, February 7th 2025 at 3:00 PM at the same location.
