He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Ward Moorman Mitchell and Mary Elizabeth Gilbert; his children, Tina Beal (Mitch) of Lincolnton, Dawn Rikard (Collin) of Maiden, Ward Gilbert, Jr. (Carolyn) of Lincolnton and Eric Gilbert (Cassondra) of Maiden; and his siblings, Lee Gilbert of Maiden and Sheila Haire of Maiden. He was also cherished by 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
