He was predeceased by: his parents, Jonas Herring Barnes and Mary Eleanor Kirby Barnes; and his siblings, Thomas Harry Barnes, Katherine B. Huddleston, Gladys B. Slaughter and Emma B. Thompson.

He is survived by: his wife Alice Beal Barnes; his children, R. "Tony" Barnes of Lake Clear, NY, Donna Barnes Sanders (Ed) of Newark, DE and Anne Barnes Lawing of Charlotte; his grandchildren, Cody Barnes, David Sanders and Beth Sanders Coffman; and his great grandchildren, Emily Sanders, James Sanders, Lauren Sanders and Nicholas Coffman.
