Family and friends must say goodbye to their beloved Stephen Richard Bender (Newland, North Carolina), born in Boston, Massachusetts, who passed away at the age of 80, on December 18, 2022. He was predeceased by : his father Dr. Charles Richard Bender. He is survived by : his wife Donna Gentile Bender; his children, Amy Lynne Bender (Chris Johnstone), Charles Richard Bender, II (Mitze), Elizabeth Jardine Bender (Brad Tombleson) and Stephen Richard Bender (Alison); and his sisters, Andrea Arquitt (Ed) and Karen Cooper (Joe). He is also survived by five grandchildren, Jake, Keith, Donny, Veda Rose & Isaiah.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for contributions to Banner Elk Presbyterian Church in Steve's memory.

“I was just thinking of my old friend Steve Bender and looked him up online. I am so sad to hear of his death. I was one of his freshmen students at OPRF High School (1971). We all used to play wargames in his lab after school. He was an avid (and GOOD!) wargamer and got great pleasure beating us. I kept up with him throughout the years and was at his second wedding. He was a good man and made a difference in the life of many. I extend my sympathy to his family.”
