He is survived by: his wife Cathy Hurt; his sisters-in-law, Edith Hurt and Gloria Mitchell; his children, John B. Hurt, Jr., Melissa Driver (David), Traci Brandon (Dewey) and Amber McLawhorn (Justin); and his grandchildren, Trygg, Layn and Allee.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to South Creek Missionary Baptist Church, 1074 South Creek Road, Aurora, NC.
