He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl Hobart Ward and Jewel Ross Ward; his wife Madeline Brown Ward (Anne Bateman Ward); his daughter Julie Ward Brady; and his sisters, Esther Ward Smith and Nell Ward Agee.
He is survived by: his children, Carl Hugh Ward Jr. (Tracy), Betsy Ward Roop (Lee) of Apex and Christina Ward Rogers (Jason) of Nakina; his sister Marian Ward Smith of Greenville; and his grandchildren, Jack Ward (Rachel) of Pittsboro, Charlotte and Molly Roop of Apex.
