He was predeceased by: his parent Grier Franklin Johnston; his brother Allen Johnston; and his great grandchild Michael Luke Brown. He is survived by: his parent Julia Benfield Johnston; his wife Eleanor Sloop Johnston; his children, Kimberly Jo Johnston Alexander (Robert Lipscomb) and Robert "Robbie" Johnston, Jr.; his siblings, Donald J. Johnston (Shelia) and Jewell J. Sherrill (Buddy); his grandchildren, Meagan Johnston and Kara Johnston; and his great grandchildren, Kayden, Kepleigh, Killian Brown and Gabe.
