He is survived by: his wife Janie; his children, Brooke (Ashley Ratcliff) of Clover, SC, Karen Smith of Kernersville, NC, David Ray (Chelsie) of Burlington, NC, Jim Abernathy (Tena) of Clover, SC and Mary Abernathy of Gastonia, NC; and his siblings, Chester Watkins, Lloyd Watkins of Bryson City, NC, Benny Watkins of Clover, SC, Ricky Watkins (Trisha) of Hildebran, NC and Judy Poindexter (Gene) of Charlotte. He is also survived by his 13 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.
