He was predeceased by: his parents, Claude V. Murphy and Dorcas I. Murphy. He is survived by: his brothers, Dewey, Fred Murphy (C. D.), Hubert, J. C., Davis of Shelby, N. C. and L. W. Lambert of Olin; his wife Nina; his daughters, Diane Bunn (Donnie) and Connie Ulacia; his grandchildren, Meagan Bunn, Aaron Bunn, Chris Bryant (Kayla), Stephanie Norris (Landon) and Emily Ulacia; his great grandchild Pressley Norris; and his sister Ruth Benoy (Gene). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
