He was predeceased by: his father Grady Franklin. He is survived by: his wife Sue Flinchum Sutphin; his sons, Hugh Edward Sutphin, Jr. (Nancy Sutphin) of Greensboro and Phillip Mark Sutphin (Patsy Taylor Sutphin) of Concord; his granddaughters, Dr. Suzanne Taylor Sutphin (Nathan Ruth) of Columbia, SC and Katherine Taylor Leonard (Eric Leonard) of Concord; and his great grandchildren, Benson Taylor Leonard, Jackson Taft Ruth, Rae Taylor Leonard, Cleo Taylor Leonard and Harper Lynn Ruth.
