He was predeceased by: his parents, Ernest Whisnant (Humdinger) and Mary Sue Cope Whisnant; his wife Elizabeth Morrison Whisnant; his son Rickey Lee Whisnant; and his siblings, Bona, Jim, Richard Whisnant, Gladys Allman, Lucille Allman and Francis Stamey.
He is survived by: his sons, Garry Whisnant of Asheville and Dennis Whisnant (Lisa) of Morganton; his daughter-in-law Deborah Whisnant of Morganton; his grandchildren, Eric Whisnant, Jennifer Church and Heath Whisnant; and his siblings, Gertrude Clontz, Sadie Whisnant, Elizabeth Norville, David, Winfred and Gene Whisnant. He is also survived by great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cross Memorial Baptist Church.
