He was predeceased by: his stepfather Eugene Phipps Irwin; and his sister Lisa Edwards. He is survived by: his mother Juanita Petty Irwin; his wife Annette Hutchens Petty; his children, Tara Petty Shore (Andy) of Wilkesboro, Amanda Petty of Las Vegas, NV, Taylor Petty Johnson (Michael) of Moravian Falls and Logan Petty; his grandchildren, Brett Shore, Nicolas Zeildon, Isabelle Petty and Isaac Petty (Madison Johnson); his brother Bobby Edwards (Denise) of Browns Summit; and also, Mark Irwin, Kate of Mouth, Phillip Irwin and Chris of Raleigh.
