He was predeceased by: his parents, Attorney Joseph Allie Hayes, Sr. and Doris Bumgarner Hayes; his brother Hale Hamilton Hayes; and his nephew Joseph A. Hayes, III. He is survived by: his brother Joseph A. Hayes II (Shirlene) of North Wilkesboro; his niece Sherri Cordell (Rob) of Myrtle Beach, SC; his sister Caroline Bentley (Ralph) of Statesville; his nephew Randy Bentley (Kim) of Blowing Rock; his nieces, Marjorie Davison (Phil) of Halifax and Melissa Bentley of Troy; and his great-nieces and great-nephews, Caroline, Sarah Davison, Joyce Windsor, Drew Bentley and Luke Davison.
