Thomas Dixon Obituary

Thomas H. Dixon was born on June 20, 1948 at Lawrence General Hospital and passed away on Monday, July 1, 2019 in his home in Mooresville, North Carolina.

Tom grew up in Maine and in Virginia before his family returned to Massachusetts. During Tom's high school years, he attended Tabor Academy, graduating in 1967. Tom attended Franklin Pierce University and graduated Cum Laude in 1972. He was also student president and was named to Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Tom earned his master’s degree from Northeastern University’s Graduate School of Business in Boston, MA, a two-year degree he achieved in 15 months.

Tom's first job out of college was for Armstrong World in Roanoke, VA, where he was #1 in his sales division. In the late 1970s, Tom moved with his wife and three children to Derry NH, where they resided until 2001. Tom worked for Nashua Corporation before he took a position with Digital Equipment Corporation for 20 years, where he served as a manager. In June of 2001, Tom moved his family south to Denver, NC to work for Solectron before retiring in Mooresville, NC.

Tom loved spending his time outdoors. He spent his summers with his family on Big Island Pond at Dixon's Lane in Derry, NH, where he often went sailing with his Snipe and made lifelong friends. Tom also raised his three children on Big Island Pond during the summer months, where he took them bumper tubing and water skiing.

Tom enjoyed a variety of antiques, anything from Corvette's to one of his all time favorites, the Chris-Craft boat. Tom also had a love for antique furniture; you would often find Tom in his garage, making his own furniture listening to his favorite band; The Rolling Stones.

In the 1980s, Tom's passion for model trains began, especially for the LGB model trains. (LGB stands for Lehmann Gross Bahn, the "Lehmann Big Train" in German.) You would always find Tom at the many model train conventions, making friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Tom enjoyed gardening, from his vast array of flower gardens, to his vegetable gardens and many fruit trees. Tom loved roller coasters and skiing; you would often find his children with him, enjoying time spent with their dad.

Thomas will be greatly loved and missed by so many!

Thomas is the son of the late Lt. Colonel Herbert S. Dixon and Ethel G. McGrath. He is survived by his three children: Christopher H. J. Dixon of Haverhill, MA; Thomas H. Dixon and spouse, Robyn Dixon of Jefferson, VT; and Sarah C. A. Dixon and fiance', David Thompson of Danville, N.H. Tom is also survived by three sisters: Christine Dixon; Dorothy J. Dixon and spouse, Thomas Bley; and Barbara E. Cohoon and spouse, Capt. John E. Cohoon, USN (Ret). Tom leaves behind one granddaughter, Amelia A. Dixon, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and many wonderful lifelong friends, especially his childhood friends.

Polly Thompson wrote a sympathy message

“Wishing peace, love and harmony to all the Dixon family as you celebrate my cousin, Tommy! He was quite a fun guy...full of energy, curiosity and quite creative. He talked "a mile a minute", always brimming with news or ideas or opinions! He always built THE BEST sand villages of us all, complete with little trees and rivers and bridges and magnificent structures!! He was such a great sailor, usually way out in front of the other "snipes" on the weekly Sunday sailboat races on Big Island Pond!”

Todd Taylor wrote a sympathy message

“In loving memory of Thomas Herbert H. Dixon, Growing up with Tommy at Camp over the summers of my childhood was truly special. Tommy loved to play. And loved 4th of July. I see they offer a candle memorial, seems appropriate for him. Others would view it as a nice gesture, Tommy would see it as the perfect ignition source for some fireworks!! I shall not forget this wonderful cousin.”
