He was predeceased by: his wife Betty Lail Sherrill; his daughter Sherrie Lynn Sherrill; and his siblings, Vassie Deaton, Sarah Caldwell, Edith Abernathy, Lola Henderson, Alvin, Carl, Jr. and Benny Sherrill.
He is survived by: his children, Buddy Wayne Sherrill (Sandra) and Beverly S. Mayhew (Mitchell); his sister Eloise Bebber Gant; his grandchildren, Stacey Robinette, Shannon Waggoner and Christina "Chrissy" Turner; and his great grandchildren, Caleb Weddington, Aaron Weddington, Cameron Waggoner and Bentley Robinette.
