He was predeceased by: his parents, Clifton Owens Shafer and Katherine Mae Anderson Shafer. He is survived by: his wife Cheryl Boulware Shaffer; his children, Kevin Shaffer, Jeff Shaffer (Angie) and Candice Austin (Brian); his siblings, Jack Shafer, Sheila Brown (Cecil), Jerry Shafer (Betty), Johnny Shafer (Jan) and Marilyn Jennings; his daughter Dawn Michelle Hinson; and his sisters, Edna Mae Koch and Janet Kennimer. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
