John Vincent Cattie Obituary
Dr. John Vincent Cattie, Sr., age 75, passed away on May 20, 2024 after a courageous 2 ½ year battle with Stage IV liver cancer. He was born on January 3, 1949 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John was the eldest son of Dr. Vincent J. Cattie and Helen F. Cattie (nee O’Donnell). He graduated from Lasalle College High School in 1966, St. Joseph’s University with a B.S. in Biology – Pre Med in 1970, and Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine with a Degree in Medicine in 1974. He completed his surgical internship and residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in 1979.
After completing his medical residency, he moved to Monroe, North Carolina with his then wife, Maureen L. Cattie (nee Loftus), and his sons, John Vincent Cattie, Jr., Timothy James Cattie, and Kevin Christopher Cattie. He was a member of the medical staff at Union Memorial Hospital (UMH). He opened his own medical practice, Metrolina Surgical Associates (MSA). MSA later became Union Surgical Associates. Dr. Cattie focused his medical practice on general & vascular surgery, thoracic surgery and upper & lower endoscopy. His specialties included diseases of the breast, breast cancer, advanced laparoscopic intra-abdominal procedures, and gastrointestinal endoscopy.
Dr. Cattie assumed significant responsibilities early in his career, serving as Chief of Staff for UMH and Director of the Union County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) among other positions of leadership. Dr. Cattie also became the first physician in Union County, NC to be trained to perform minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, offering this groundbreaking surgical technique to hundreds of patients during his career. Before he retired from his medical practice in 2016, he served as an Advanced Wound Care Physician at the Wound Care Center for Carolinas Healthcare System – Union.
Dr. Cattie was a member of the American Medical Association, American Society of General Surgeons, American Society of Breast Surgeons, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, and was named a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
Dr. Cattie is survived by his current wife Kimberly Cattie (nee Deese), his former wife Maureen L. Cattie (nee Loftus), his three sons, John Vincent Cattie, Jr., (wife Stephanie and son Tucker), Timothy James Cattie (wife Amanda, daughter Morgan, son Loftus, and daughter Harper), and Kevin Christopher Cattie (ex-wife Kristin and son Christopher) as well as his sister Dolores M. Kane (nee Cattie) (husband Michael and children Colleen, Bridget, Christine, Brendan, Sheila, Deirdre, Adam, and Brian) and his brother Donald K. Cattie (his wife Nancy and son Kevin). Predeceasing Dr. Cattie were his parents, Dr. Vincent J. Cattie and Helen F. Cattie (nee O’Donnell), his older sister, Marilyn T. Wilkinson (nee Cattie), and his younger brother, Paul H. Cattie.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 at 2:00PM in the Winston Chapel of Holland Funeral Service, 806 Circle Drive, Monroe, NC 28112.
