He was predeceased by: his parents, Joe Lee and Myrtle Helms; and his sister Doris Hinson. He is survived by: his wife Phyllis Pressley Helms of Charlotte; his children, James Douglas Helms (Tina) of Monroe and Angela Helms Funderud (Billy) of Matthews; his siblings, Johnny Paul Helms (Bernice), Juanita Godfrey (Harry), Carolyn Fowler, Helen Barnhardt and Sarah Swink; his grandchildren, Jackie Berry (Ryan), Dillon Helms (Kayla), Dalton Helms (Paige), Allison Funderud and Anna Funderud; and his great grandchild Nolan Michael Berry.
