He was predeceased by: his parents, Clarence Frederick Howell and Legia Mae Trexler Howell; his wife Katherine Gardner Howell; and his sister Mary Moncada. He is survived by: his daughter Donna Knight (Jeffrey); his granddaughters, Beth Knight (Addison Verdell) of Monroe and Mia Knight of Monroe; and his brother C. F. "Peck" Howell of Greeneville, TN..

In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to Central United Methodist Church, general fund 801 S. Hayne St., Monroe, NC 28112.
