He was predeceased by: his parents, Lisha Morrison Carter and Tita Foster Carter Bailey; his children, Sandra Nell Carter Cope and William Ray "Billy" Carter; his granddaughter Kimberly Carter Doby; his great grandchild Hunter Gray Tate; his son-in-law Terry Hardin; and his siblings, Jack Carter, Peggy Rummage and Dorothy Sowers.

He is survived by: his wife Ruby Nell Everhart Carter; his children, Morrison Gray Carter, Jr., Paul Gregory Carter (Tammie), Theresa Ann Carter Hardin and Karen Carter; his daughter-in-law Vanessa Carter; his siblings, Joe Bailey (Judy) and Sallie Buie; his brother-in-law Felix Rummage; and his cousin Mary Ann Barnhardt. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; seven great great-grandchildren.
