He was predeceased by: his parents, Everette Whisnant and Elizabeth Elliotte Whisnant; and his siblings, Brenda Elizabeth and Carlton Whisnant. He is survived by: his wife Carol Newton Whisnant; his children, Cynthia Whisnant Brasher (Craig) of Fayetteville, NC, Merritt Whisnant (Debbie) of Harrisburg, NC, Tyndall Whisnant (Wendy Santana) of Durham, NC and Phillip Whisnant of Los Angeles, CA; his grandsons, Dylan Whisnant, Caleb Whisnant, Tyler Whisnant and Garrett Whisnant; his sisters, Joan W. Owen of Matthews, NC and Margaret W. Tinsley (Jerry) of Brevard, NC; his sister-in-law Frances Newton Hornback of Alton, MO; and his cousin Garry Watkins of Salisbury, NC..
