He was predeceased by: his parents, Lloyd Francis Bates and Exie Lee Thompson; his daughter Heather Etienne; and his brothers, Edward Thompson and William Bates.
He is survived by: his wife Cindy Wood Bates; his daughter Misty Edwards (Brant) of Fort Campbell, Kentucky; his grandchildren, Brittany Scott (Zack) and Dylan Edwards; and his siblings, Elizabeth Childress of Virginia Beach, Frances Kuykendall of Columbus, Judy Johnson (Keith) of Mill Spring and Charles Bates (Vicki) of Henrietta. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
