It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Chessie Shumate of McGrady, North Carolina, who passed away on January 11, 2021, at the age of 90, leaving to mourn family and friends. She was predeceased by: her parents, Harrison B. Wagoner and Mertie Royal Wagoner; her husband William Clarence Shumate, Sr.; and her daughter Judy Carol Shumate. She is survived by: her children, Gail Shumate-Eller of North Wilkesboro, Diane Blevins (Garry) of Lansing, Kay Shumate Bening of Addieville, IL, Rex Shumate (MaryLou) of McGrady, Bill Shumate (Toni) of North Wilkesboro, Ronnie Shumate (Betty) of McGrady, Rev. Donny Shumate (Kay) of McGrady, Ray Shumate (Gail) of North Wilkesboro and Bobby Shumate (Leann) of Taylorsville; her grandchildren, Donna Rhodes, Richard Shumate, Scott Shumate, Wendy Howell, Misty Jackson, Ronnie Shumate, Jr., Jennifer Shumate, Michael Shumate, Bonita Hall, Brian Shumate, Nettie Cothren, Brittany McSwaim, Jesse Dyer, Matthew Shumate, Allyssa Shumate, Steven Tooley, Natasha Jarden, Emily Bening, William Bening, Benjamin Shumate and Jonathan Shumate; her stepgrandchildren, Teresa Griffin and Michael Griffin; and her siblings, Peggy Jean Edwards (Junior) of North Wilkesboro, Gladys Stamper of McGrady, Lorene Wood of McGrady and Willie Wagoner of North Wilkesboro. She is also survived by forty-eight great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren.
