She was predeceased by: her parents, James Anderson Nelson and Lou Anna Mabe Nelson; and her siblings, John, Bill, Boyd, Thomas "Fuzzy" Nelson, Lillie Nelson, Mozelle Crews, Euna Mae Joyce and Frances Joyce.
She is survived by: her children, James T. Steele (Barbara) of Raleigh and Lisa S. Shinn of Mayodan; her grandsons, Matt Robertson, Josh Shinn (Jasmine) and Brian Steele; and her great grandchildren, Emmett and Noah Shinn.
