He was predeceased by: his parents, George Lawson and Nellie Lee Cardwell; and his wife Kay Mavis Cardwell. He is survived by: his children, George Andrew Cardwell (Deborah) and Beth Annette Cardwell Middleton (Jeff); his grandchildren, Anne Marie Forrest (Kevin), Jordan Middleton (Kennedy), Elizabeth Baumann (Taylor) and Gaelan Middleton; his great grandchildren, Connor and Lily Grace Forrest; and his brother Bill Cardwell. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Ayersville Baptist Church, 310 NC Hwy 770, Mayodan, NC 27027; or The Alzheimer's Association.
