He was predeceased by: his father Lester Weldon Vernon; his sisters, Christine Evans and Louise Clemmons; and his half-brother Weldon Vernon. He is survived by: his wife Kitty Still Vernon; his children, Mark Vernon (Annette) and Cathy Nelson (Randy); and his grandchildren, Matthew Nelson (Amiee), Leigh Nelson, Amber Nelson, Michael Vernon and Michelle Duncan (Tyler). He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren.
