He was predeceased by: his parents, Charlie Otha Cardwell and Rennie Louise Vaden Cardwell; and his sister Patsy Pegram. He is survived by: his wife Evadean Nelson Cardwell; his son Jeffrey Cardwell (Terri) of Clemmons; his granddaughters, Jennifer Jennison (David) of Atlanta, Georgia, Stephanie Herndon (Wells) of Charlotte and Katie Cardwell of New York City; his great grandchildren, Jack and Charlie Jennison; his nieces, Wendy Ragan, Darlene Bryant, Lynn Conner and Diana Sparks; and his nephew Dwayne Nelson.
