He was predeceased by: his parents, W. T. Gales and Mable Gales; his wife Pauline Gales; his siblings, Bobby, James, Hilton, Will Thomas Gales, Ruth Lindsey and Barbara Louise Brigman; his grandson Jamie Gales; and his great grandchildren, Serenity Locklear and Emma Faye Oxendine.
He is survived by: his children, Emma Evans (Stevie), Peggy Oxendine (Jimmy), Rev. Thomas Oxendine (Judy), Larry Gales (Lisa), Terry Gales (Carla) and Michael Gales (Michelle); and his siblings, Vernon Gales (Alice), Martha Maryhew and Lilly May Yawn.
