He was predeceased by: his parents, Lonnie Smiling and Frances Smiling; his wife Carol Jean Scott Smiling; and his brother Anthony Smiling. He is survived by: his son Eddie William Smiling Jr. (Yulonda) of Maxton; his grandchildren, Joshua Allen Smiling (Beck) of Red Springs and Cheyenne Angel Smiling (Kristen); his siblings, Andrew Smiling of Pembroke, Michael Smiling of Red Springs, Debra Smiling of Maxton, Vickie Smiling of Maxton and Shirley Smiling Henderson of Red Springs; his grandchildren, Dakota Jacobs, Aaron Locklear, Eddie Smiling III, Eli Smiling, Lakeyn Oxendine and Chylon Scott; his great grandchildren, LuLou McKinsley Smiling and Lootah Jordan Luka Smiling; and his close friends, Donnie Scott of Maxton, Harrol Richardson of Maxton and Wanda Hunt. He is also survived by other relatives and friends.
