He was predeceased by: his parents, Fred Nelson and Helen Nelson; and his son Rick Nelson. He is survived by: his wife Rachel Nelson; his stepchildren, Mike Strawn, David Strawn and Beth Daniel; his grandchildren, Terra, Scott, Becca, Julie, Ryan, Jeff, Joseph, Matthew, Daniel, Michelle, Rachel and Andrew; and his great grandchildren, Finn, Chloe, Jacob, Reese, Leo, Olive, Henry, Jones, Gwen, Lex and Andie.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, NC television ministry.
