He was predeceased by: his parents, James L. Metcalf and Lessie King Metcalf; his former wife Susan Allen Metcalf; and his grandson Beau Hensley. He is survived by: his wife Wilma Evans Metcalf; his children, Elaine Phillips (Farrell) and John Metcalf (Danielle); his stepson Jason Sams; his siblings, Carolyn Smith, Don Metcalf (Linda), Daryl Metcalf (Sheila) and Royce Metcalf (Jinnie); his grandchildren, Tonya Metcalf (Isaiah), Trevor Phillips and Tommy Phillips; his great grandchild Cameron Hensley; and his stepgrandchildren, Russell Estepp and Johnny Estepp.
