He was predeceased by: his parents, Avery Phillips and Millie West Phillips; his wife Patricia Layman Phillips; his grandson Colby Murphy; and his brother Don Phillips.

He is survived by: his children, Tina Murphy (Mike) of Mars Hill and Tony Phillips (Gwyn) of Weaverville; his friend Linda Briggs of Marshall; his grandchildren, Teghan Murphy (Jack Brazil), Kristyn Edmonds (Harrison) and Katie Phillips; his great grandchild Archer Edmonds; his granddaughter-in-law Loriel Murphy; and his nephew Barry Phillips.
