He was predeceased by : his brother James Henry Pernell. He is survived by : his wife Effie Smith Pernell; his children, Christopher Warren Pernell and Paige Pernell Klas (Peter) of Raleigh; his grandchildren, Richard Colin Pernell, Sarah Katherine Pernell, Peter Gerard Klas, Peter Caleb Klas, Gabriel Joseph Klas and Liam Jordan Klas; and his sister Peggy Pernell Riddle.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers that any memorials be directed to the St. Jude's Children Hospital or to Hillsdale College.
