He was predeceased by: his parents, William Thompson and Viola Thompson; and his adoptive parents, Bunnie King and Ruby King. He is survived by: his wife Wanda Sue Edwards Thompson; his children, Willie Thompson Jr. and Rebecca Thompson Roberson; his son-in-law Chris Harrell of Wilson; and his sister Minnie Pearl Thompson of Louisburg. He is also survived by three grandchildren.
