He was predeceased by: his father Fred Austin Helms, Sr.; and his grandmother Velma Childers. He is survived by: his wife Dorothy Childers Helms; his sons, Jason Helms (Cherie) of Claremont and John Austin Helms (Hali) of Maiden; his siblings, Fred Austin Helms, Jr. of Lincolnton, Tammy Tessner of Lincolnton and Mary Hullett of Lincolnton; his grandchildren, Jacob, Elijah, Adali, Gavin and Gage; and also Hazel Helms of Lincolnton.
