He was predeceased by: his parents, Ralph Clarence Canaday I and Onie Lewis Canaday; his wife Carolyn Malpass Canaday of Lincolnton; and his brothers, Ralph Clarence Canaday II and Merwin Sharpe Canaday of Four Oaks.

He is survived by: his children, Carla Canaday Stewart (John Charles Hartzog) of Lincolnton and Maurice Lewis Canaday, Jr. (Michele) of Lincolnton; his granddaughters, Rachel Stewart Reinders (Jurrie), Hailey Smith Cornwell (Jeff) and Scarlett Lea Canaday; and his great grandchildren, Beau Alexander Reinders, Crew Jurrien Reinders, Esme Stewart Reinders, Quinlyn Doris Cornwell and Owynn Elizabeth Cornwell.
