He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Erson Whitener, Sr. and Lois Clary Whitener; his wife Kay Chandler Whitener; and his children, Joan Van Dusen, Henry Erson Whitener, III and Eric Whitener.

He is survived by: his daughter Lee O'Malley (John) of Matthews; his grandchildren, Chris O'Malley (Rebecca) of Charlotte, Mark O'Malley of Huntersville, Erin Taylor of Colorado and Taylor Weese of Charlotte; his brother Dan Whitener (Linda) of Huntersville; and his brother-in-law Dr. D. C. Chandler (Winborne) of Winston-Salem. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lincoln County Humane Society, PO Box 23, Lincolnton, NC 28093.
