He is survived by: his children, Freida Gates of Lincolnton, Glenn Gates (Paula) of Lincolnton and Joseph Gates (Misty) of Vale; and his siblings, Junior Gates of Lincolnton, Patricia Gates of Lincolnton and Marcene Spencer. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
